This is a question that I’ve asked myself many, many times. Well used to….when I was a teenager and in my early twenties I was plagued with the embarrassment of excessive sweating and spent hours researching causes and solutions to my problem.
I discovered that sweating is a natural bodily function that is essential to life. However, for some people, including myself excessive sweating is an embarrassing problem that affects them to the point of mental distress. I didn’t realise that so many people were affected and it was comforting to know that I wasn’t alone.
Sweating too much is classified as a medical condition that causes an abnormal amount of sweat to be excreted in excess to that required of normal body regulation and is named hyperhidrosis. Although this medical condition is not fatal, it can be really embarrassing and mainly comes in the form of sweaty palms, underarm sweat or facial sweating.
Sweating in the face is the most obvious of all and was the one thing that I really needed to stop. It caused me nervousness and distress with drips coming down my forehead and onto my face, and the more nervous I got, the worse it became! As I continued to research, I found out that sweating is your body’s temperature control function. The sweat glands produce perspiration which is brought to your skin’s surface when your temperature goes up. It is your body’s way of getting rid of excess heat which is produced by metabolism or working muscles and the amount of sweat produced depends on the state of your emotions and physical activity which means that if we are exercising or working physically hard, we of course expect to sweat, just as when you’re about to do a presentation or interview, you are likely to be sweating bucket loads.

Sweating is normal, everyone does it and everyone should. It is the body’s way of getting rid of toxins in your body. It is a physiological process that our body uses for defensive purposes and is a natural phenomenon in our body just like when our stomachs digest food and when we breathe.
Hyperhidrosis however, is a medical condition that causes perspiration far greater than the physiological needs of the body. Hyperhidrosis is basically the medical name for overactive sweat glands, and is a fairly rare condition that affects about 3% of all humans. It mainly comes in the form of excessive underarm sweating and problems tend to start in late adolescence, while palm and sole sweating often begins earlier, around the age 13 (on average). Untreated, these problems may continue throughout life and for those who do suffer from this condition, life can be very hard.
It can cause embarrassing moments at work, at school even when socializing. Having to carry around a paper towel due to excessive sweating, or a spare shirt/top, in your bag can be a nightmare but underarm sweating should not be taken in silence. That’s the exact question I used to ask myself over and over. Whether it was lying in bed at night, down the gym, or just in work during the day. There seemed to be no solution, and it seemed to be only me that was suffering.
In fact, excessive sweating is a common abnormality among many people, all around the world. It is the moisture given off by the skin from activity of the sweat glands. The amount of sweat produced depends on our state of emotions and physical activity which means that if we are exercising or working physically hard, we of course expect to sweat. Unwanted or excessive sweating is a condition known as hyperhidrosis and is most often a result of over anxiety and stress. This is when the body seems to sweat uncontrollably in situations where most people seem to remain dry. This how I felt for years until I finally managed to treat my condition. Everyone used to tell me, if you get anxious or stressed out the just take a moment to chill out. It didn’t help!
Hyperhidrosis can either be generalized or localized to specific parts of the body. Hands, feet, axillae, and the groin area are among the most active regions of perspiration due to the relatively high concentration of sweat glands; however, any part of the body may be affected. Hyperhidrosis, however, is not an uncommon problem, especially at a low level of severity. If you have it, you are not alone.
