Sweating is normal, everyone does it and everyone should. It is the body’s way of getting rid of toxins in your body. It is a physiological process that our body uses for defensive purposes and is a natural phenomenon in our body just like when our stomachs digest food and when we breathe.

Hyperhidrosis however, is a medical condition that causes perspiration far greater than the physiological needs of the body. Hyperhidrosis is basically the medical name for overactive sweat glands, and is a fairly rare condition that affects about 3% of all humans. It mainly comes in the form of excessive underarm sweating and  problems tend to start in late adolescence, while palm and sole sweating often begins earlier, around the age 13 (on average). Untreated, these problems may continue throughout life and for those who do suffer from this condition, life can be very hard.

It can cause embarrassing moments at work, at school even when socializing. Having to carry around a paper towel due to excessive sweating, or a spare shirt/top, in your bag can be a nightmare but  underarm sweating should not be taken in silence. In fact, excessive sweating is a common abnormality among many people, all around the world. It is the moisture given off by the skin from activity of the sweat glands. The characteristic odour of sweat is caused by the breakdown, or decomposition, of the sweat by bacteria. Sweat is regulated by the Sympathetic Nervous System, which controls about five million sweat glands in a body. About half of those glands are located in the hands. The amount of sweat produced depends on our state of emotions and physical activity which means that if we are exercising or working physically hard, we of course expect to sweat. Unwanted or excessive sweating is a condition known as hyperhidrosis and is most often a result of over anxiety and stress. This is when the body seems to sweat uncontrollably in situations where most people seem to remain dry. This how I felt for years until I finally managed to treat my condition. Everyone used to tell me, if you get anxious or stressed out the just take a moment to chill out. It didn’t help!

Hyperhidrosis can either be generalized or localized to specific parts of the body. Hands, feet, axillae, and the groin area are among the most active regions of perspiration due to the relatively high concentration of sweat glands; however, any part of the body may be affected. Hyperhidrosis, however, is not an uncommon problem, especially at a low level of severity. If you have it, you are not alone. Sweating is the body’s natural defence, which maintains body temperature. Sweat normally contains water, and very small amounts of salt, urea, sugar and ammonia. By sweating body cools itself of the heat that may get generated because of outside temperature, physical work, and emotional stress.

Different Types of Sweat- There are two different types of sweat glands in our bodies – eccrine sweat glands and apocrine sweat glands. Eccrine glands are distributed all over the body. Apocrine sweat glands however, are located on the scalp, armpits and the genital area and tend not to produce much fluid. Sweat is generally odourless. Most of the times, it is the bacterial disintegration of sweat of both the types that produces odour.

Over and Under Sweating- some of us may suffer from over sweating (hyperhidrosis) or very less or no sweating (anhidrosis). Very low sweating may be life threatening, while over sweating may sometimes be caused by some severe body problems.

To avoid odour due to sweating, the best method is to keep skin dry. Good hygiene will not allow bacteria to develop and multiply. Change of clothes after sweating is another method, because clothes carry sweat and can cause odour. If you have excessive sweat or are getting troubled by sweat, please consult your doctor who may suggest different methods that may include use of antiperspirants, botox injection, Iontophoresis and in rare cases surgery.
